Drill-downs

Almost every figure in analytics opens. Click a card, a chart or a row, and a detail page shows how the figure was worked out and the records behind it. For example, Net sales opens the completed orders whose takings make up the figure.

Who can do this: the same staff who can see the page the figure is on. Drill-downs need the Available on Scale grade. On a lower grade, the figures show a lock mark and do not open.

Steps#

1. Open any page under Analytics and choose your dates.
2. Click a figure card, a point on a chart, or a row in a breakdown.
3. The detail page opens with the same dates and the part you clicked drawn again at the top.
4. Read How this was calculated, then the breakdowns, then the records at the bottom.
5. Open a record to see it in full.

What the detail page shows#

• The figure again, with its trend over time where one exists.
• How this was calculated: what the figure counts, whether it follows the date range or describes things as they stand now, and any limits.
• Breakdowns as ranked bars, for example by store or by payment method.
• The records, with a line above the list that says how they relate to the figure. For example, "That count is the figure above." or that the rows' amounts add up to the figure. When they cannot add up, the page says so and why.

How drilling behaves#

• The dates travel with you. The detail page shows the same period, and the comparison if it was on. Nothing resets.
• A breakdown row opens its own records where the server can filter them. Clicking a payment method opens the completed orders paid that way. A row stays unclickable when there is no such filter.
• A store row narrows the whole view to that store. The page says "Narrowed to" and the store's name, with Show all selected stores to go back. One store has one currency, so money hidden under mixed currencies appears again.
• Performance rows open a report. On Performance, a store, product, category or customer row opens that one's own report: its sales, units and orders over the period. Product and customer reports cover every store in the business. The Guest row has no report.

Behind the scenes#

The product report's figures carry one difference on purpose. As the page says: "Sales and units are net of returns. The order count is not, because an order that was later returned still happened."

Some detail pages list worked-out rows rather than stored records. "Products that sold nothing" and "grade A products" are answers the app works out, so their tables show those rows.
