Rules & scheduling

Besides its type, a discount has rules that decide when and for whom it applies. The server checks every rule each time it prices an order.

Who can do this: the Administrator and staff with the Admin role set these rules. Store Admin and Reports Viewer can view them. Discounts are a plan feature (see the badge above).

Before you start#

Open the discount with Create discount or Edit discount. The rules are in the Locations, Discount options, Stacking and limits, Customer eligibility and Discount schedule sections.

Set the dates#

1. Under Discount schedule, pick a Start date & time. This is required.
2. Pick an End date & time if the discount should stop. Leave it empty to run the discount until you switch it off.
3. Save.

The discount still works at the exact end time, and stops after it. Times are read in the store's own time zone, so "ends at midnight" means midnight where the sale happens.

Limit to certain hours (happy hour)#

1. Under Discount schedule, turn on Limit discount to specific hours (Happy Hour).
2. Under Repeating days, pick the days of the week.
3. Set a Start time and an End time.
4. Save.

A window can run past midnight. For example, 22:00 to 02:00 means from ten at night until two the next morning. The builder shows Overnight window when you set one. The start and end cannot be the same time.

Set a minimum spend#

Under Minimum spend, enter a Minimum order subtotal. The cart must reach this amount before the discount applies.

By default, items in Exclusions do not count towards the minimum. Turn on Count excluded items toward the minimum if they should.

Cap how much a percentage can take#

Under Stacking and limits, enter a Maximum discount amount. The app explains it like this: "A 50% discount capped at 25 never takes off more than 25." This field is for percentage discounts.

Choose stores#

Under Locations:

• Global (All Stores): the discount works in every store.
• Store mapped (specific locations): pick the stores under Available at these locations. The discount works nowhere else. You must pick at least one store.

If you delete a store that was the only store on a discount, that discount is switched off. It does not become a discount for every store.

Choose products#

For Amount off products, choose Specific products or Specific categories under Applies to. Use Exclusions to leave out some products or categories.

Choose customers#

Under Customer eligibility, choose one of:

• All customers: no limit.
• Specific customers: pick people under Eligible customers.
• Customer groups: pick groups under Eligible groups. See Customer groups.

An order with no customer attached (a guest checkout) cannot use a discount limited to customers or groups.

Behind the scenes#

The server checks the rules in this order: status, dates, usage limits, store, customers, day and hours, then the minimum spend. The first rule that fails gives the reason you see at checkout.
